Road Safety Week
30 January 2010
Last week all students took part in a variety of activities to raise awareness of Road Safety issues. These included a presentation from The Traffic Police, talks by a traffic advisor, quizzes and fun activities. The theme was’ holding hands – Being Safe’.
The week ended with all 480 students, staff and parents being part of a giant walking bus. The children lined up in school in twos and then followed a route which took them outside the school gates, around the exterior wall, crossing the road on the zebra crossing. The Police were on hand and closed the road for us while this activity took place. The children walked in two’s, holding hands.
The thinking behind the walking bus is to encourage children to walk to school. Obviously this is not applicable for us here but it fitted in with our theme of "holding hands - being safe" and raised awareness for the children of the importance of holding hands when near roads.
The children were charged QR5 bus fare each (collected by the school council "conductors") which will be added to the money collected by the Year 4 bake sale for Haiti.
Many classes made banners illustrating what they had learned during the week. Many parents joined us on the walk.
